Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day began on November 11, 1919 when President Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day. November 11th was declared a legal Federal holiday on May 13, 1938 and was called Armistice Day. The name was changed to Veterans Day June 1, 1954 with legislation signed by President Eisenhower. Beginning in 1971 the Federal observance of Veterans Day becomes the fourth Monday of October. In 1978 Veterans Day observance reverts to November 11.
My history with Veterans Day began 3 years ago when my youngest son joined the National Guard and was activated shortly after finishing basic training. It was then I realized the sacrifice our military personal make in their lives.
That Veterans Day I sent a Thank you card to my brothers who served in the military and was excited to hear back from them how much they appreciated the card. The next year I included my son and some friends on my list and again received gratitude from them for the cards.
Sending a thank you to the Veterans that I know will be a yearly occurrence for me. Not only is it a much deserved appreciation but also a very good feeling for myself.
